Ant has aphasia, a disorder of language and communication. Aphasia can affect a person’s ability to speak, read and write but it doesn’t affect their intelligence, personality or who they are. Ant’s aphasia results from his stroke in 2007 – there are an estimated 350,000 people in the UK who have the same condition. The condition has not changed his values, what he stands for, or his ability to make a difference. Ten years ago, it would have been impossible for Ant to effectively communicate in the States but modern technology has given him – and others like him – a voice, and Ant wants to use that voice to make a positive change for all Islanders.
